REGISTER NOW! TEA SATE ASIA - SHANGHAI and TEA SATE - SEATTLE

  • Shanghai: TEA SATE Asia, 14-16 June 2019. Theme: Moving People.
  • Seattle: TEA SATE - Seattle, 26-27 September, plus optional, post-conference event on 28 September. Theme: Embracing Diversity. Call for presentations is active through June 21, 2019

The TEA added the TEA SATE conference to its slate of industry events in 2007, to foster dialog in the business community about the methodology of Experience Design. The SATE acronym stands for Story + Architecture + Technology = Experience. SATE also alludes to a collaborative culture of production, in which designers, technologists and clients work closely together from the early stages of a project, in a team structure often more horizontal than hierarchical.

TEA SATE Europe 2019: Moving People

The theme of TEA SATE Europe 2019 was "Moving People." Organizers stated, "Be it physical, emotional, or technological, this year's theme of 'Moving People' covers a broad spectrum of how we take people in journeys within the themed entertainment industry."

Keynote speaker was Yves Pépin, a TEA Thea lifetime honoree considered one of the great innovators and artists of themed entertainment, whose work defined the modern genre of the nighttime multimedia spectacular.

The conference was co-chaired by TEA Europe and Middle East Division (TEA EME) Board President Matt Barton of 7thSense Design; Margreet Papamichael of CLEAR Associates; TEA immediate Past President David Willrich of DJ Willrich Ltd.; and Paul Kent of Electrosonic.

TEA Masters and TEA NextGen

The TEA SATE conference content is enriched by connecting with other TEA programs and initiatives, such as TEA Masters and TEA NextGen.

Philipp van Stratum of P&P Projects was a featured speaker, highlighting his status as a TEA Master, named in 2018 and recognizing his accomplishments as a creative director. The TEA Masters program honors masters of their craft in the global visitor attractions industry. (The new slate of TEA Masters will be introduced and celebrated in conjunction with TEA SATE - Seattle, 26-27 September 2019.)

There was also a TEA NextGen "Practice Makes Perfect" presentation given by Ishen Wu and Eppo Zeegers - illustrating the culmination of a creative exercise in which a team of European TEA NextGen members worked on concept and design for a fictitious theme park, under the guidance and tutelage of Alex Korting and Laura Marakowits. The TEA NextGen initiative offers discounted membership and other benefits to college and university students and recent graduates who are looking to build careers in themed entertainment.

Evening events were lively, with attendees celebrating the occasion in period dress and providing entertainment. Hosting the conference at Parc Astérix provided opportunities to explore the park's offerings and enjoy the unique setting completely in tune with the subject and purpose of the event.

TEA International Board President Michael Mercadante of Main Street Design was present at the conference and took the stage briefly to greet the attendees. Later, he commented, "I was extremely happy to attend the TEA SATE Europe conference. This event had its own unique spirit, which was very enjoyable. It was tailored to the region, particularly in its social events, while delivering the high quality of content that is a TEA SATE signature. Congratulations to all who were involved in its success."

Matt Barton

Matt Barton summarizes: “Thank you to all the members of the TEA EME Board of Directors who contributed to TEA SATE Europe 2019 in so many ways - and to all of the TEA members, conference delegates, sponsors, speakers, organizers and TEA staff, for their participation and support. We are proud that this global gathering had 21 countries represented. It was this juxtaposition of diversity and common ground, as well as a huge dollop of enthusiasm from all, that I believe created the 'unique spirit' that Michael Mercadante so aptly recognizes. Thank you also to our hosts Parc Astérix & Compagnie des Alpes who went above and beyond to ensure we were looked after throughout the conference.”

Additional information on speakers and sessions for this TEA event and others can be found on the TEA Events App, which is downloadable from the Apple Store and Google Play.
