Together, the annual Summit & Thea Awards of the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) comprise TEA’s most important weekend of events. They are also vital business networking gatherings. The TEA Summit & Thea Awards bring the international leisure attractions community together to celebrate and learn about top projects, people, events, technologies, markets and trends. The annual TEA Summit and Thea Awards are two of the ways that TEA has brought international attention to the unique business of themed entertainment.

The annual TEA Summit & Thea Awards take place over the course of three days on a weekend in the spring, in Los Angeles. They are ticketed events and receive support from corporate sponsorship and extensive coverage from the industry press and in the mainstream media.

TEA Summit Day One (April 5) focuses on the visitor attractions industry through a business lens and considers the owner/operator perspective as well as the creative/project point of view. Day One offers an exclusive in-depth look at the headline Thea Award recipients: a conversation with the Buzz Price lifetime honoree (2018 recipient, Phil Hettema of The Hettema Company), and case study of the Thea Classic (2018 recipient, Cedar Point). Day One also includes the global market outlook discussion with top economics specialist AECOM, peer discussion on "elephant in the room" industry topics and more.

Taken together, the TEA Summit and Thea Awards Gala are one big weekend of professional development, networking, education and celebration, revolving around the current slate of TEA Thea Awards recipients and headlined by the best of the global themed entertainment business - industry superstars, creative and tech pioneers, and top projects all leading the way for tourism, real estate development and great guest experiences.

The TEA Summit content changes from year to year but is always informative and provocative.

2018 TEA Summit Day One co-chairs: TEA Past President and Educational Programming Committee Chair Christine Kerr of BaAM Productions and TEA International Board Member Joanna del Moral of BRPH Architects-Engineers, Inc. "Elephant in the Room" sessions are co-chaired by TEA Past President Steve Birket and Experience Architect Kile Ozier.

Day Two of the TEA Summit (April 6) is Thea Case Studies Day, a deep-dive into the projects being recognized with a Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement at the Thea Awards Gala on the following evening (April 7). Presentations are made by the owners and their creative partners, sharing insights and in-depth views on the project’s development and implementation. The slate of international award recipients ensures this day is full of unique personalities who are excited to share the details of their project with the attendees. Case Studies Day welcomes a broad industry audience, including TEA NextGen (student and academic) members and the press.

2018 TEA Summit Day Two co-chairs: TEA Past President Roberta Perry of ETI, and Pat MacKay of OnesandZeros Media.

The prestigious Thea Award is considered one of the attraction industry's greatest honors. The awards were founded in 1994 by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA). TEA's annual Thea Awards Gala is an elegant, black-tie dinner event held in the spring in Los Angeles, following the TEA Summit. Want to volunteer?

As with all TEA events, both the TEA Summit and Thea Awards depend partly on volunteers from within the Association to help with a wide range of tasks. Each year, TEA needs help creating, staging and producing the annual Thea Awards Gala in Los Angeles. Depending on what you volunteer to do, this usually requires anywhere from one to 10 days in the course of a 6-week period usually in February-March (the Gala is held every spring, usually in April).

Being part of this team involves real work and responsibility and the ability to take direction. It’s also fun and a great way to meet people and learn more about the industry.
