Sesame Street: Street Mission Wins BIG! Sally dark ride awarded “Family Ride of the Year” and “Europe’s Best New Ride”

Jacksonville, FL – Sally Dark Rides has been celebrating since the IAAPA European Expo after receiving two major industry awards for its successful interactive dark ride, Sesame Street: Street Mission.

The interactive dark ride opened at PortAventura World earlier this year and was the first dark ride at the park, and the first Sesame Street-themed ride in Europe.  Street Mission was nominated in a variety of categories and for a variety of industry and fan-based awards.  At the end of the week, it received the prestigious Park World Excellence Award for “Family Ride of the Year” and placed first in the Kirmes European Star Awards in “Europe’s Best New Ride” category.

The near 6 minute ride experience (10 minute preshow and 5:50 minute ride) includes realistic Sesame Street sets and scenery and numerous animatronics from the iconic television show.  Detective Grover is your guide through this interactive adventure, urging guests to collect clues that will help solve a mystery happening on Sesame Street.  With lovable characters, immersive scenery, interactive gameplay, and even changing scents throughout, this mixed media attraction appeals to guests of all ages.

“Theme parks are one of the most powerful ways for children and families to engage and connect with their favorite characters.  Our partner PortAventura World, one of the top regional theme park resorts in Europe, has done an amazing job along with Sally Dark Rides, in capturing the true essence of the Sesame Street brand and creating an immersive experience that brings our characters to life for park guests.” – Ed Wells, Senior Vice President and Head of International Media and Education, Sesame Workshop

“Street Mission Dark ride  has been a huge success for our family destination resort. We are on track for another record year!!”  --  PortAventura World

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to take home not one, but two awards for our latest dark ride installation - Sesame Street: Street Mission, which opened this year at PortAventura World.  Riding is like stepping inside your favorite childhood show.  You get to drive down Sesame Street, collect cookie clues and see Big Bird up close and personal  - it makes you feel like a kid again.  For this ride to be recognized on Sesame Street’s 50th anniversary year as the “Family Ride of the Year” and “Europe’s Best New Ride” makes this honor all the more special.  These awards recognize all of those that poured their hearts into this ride - the Sally team, our partners, and all our dedicated subcontractors.  Congratulations to all!”  -- Lauren Wood Weaver, Sally Dark Rides

About Sesame Street: Street Mission

This interactive dark ride that takes you on an exciting mission, traveling down Sesame Street in taxi cabs equipped with ‘Clue Collectors.’  You’ll get to help some of the most popular Sesame Street characters who are trying to solve a mystery.

The Story: The citizens of Sesame Street baked the World’s Biggest Cookie for the Cookie Day Parade…but it has gone missing!  The event will have to be postponed unless we can help Detective Grover solve the mystery of ‘The Big Cookie Caper!’  We’ll follow a trail of cookie crumb clues down Sesame Street, collecting them as we go, trying to figure out where the Big Cookie is and who took it.  Only then will Cookie Day be saved!

The Project: Sally Dark Rides created the ride concept, wrote the ride script and managed the entire project.  Sally also designed the ride building, the "Sesame Street Taxi Cab" ride vehicles, the interactive "Clue Collector" devices and all technical elements including audiovisual, show action and special effects.  We also built the animatronics, show action equipment, and control racks.  Sally then oversaw our team of subcontractors, including: Henson Creature Shop (who worked with Sally's mechanical team to create the iconic animatronic Sesame Street characters), ETF (who provided the trackless ride vehicles), Bon Art (who worked with our team to create the amazing CG animation and gameplay), Alterface (the dynamic interactive system), BMorrow Productions (who worked with us to design the sets and scenery), Sim Leisure (who built and installed the incredible sets and scenery), RealD (for the 3D equipment), Ralph Alberts (helped us fabricate the interactive devices), Strong MDI (our screen surfacing providers), Weigl (show control), DCI (who created our unique show doors), Jon Baker Productions (who created the super fun musical score), Technilux (lighting design) and BOSE (who provided all of our audio equipment).

The first ride of its kind

  • First Sesame Street-themed ride in Europe
  • First time the Sesame Street puppeteer’s performances have been used to direct CG animation (Sally directed the performances)
  • First time Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and Sally Dark Rides have combined their talents to create animatronic figures
