TEA excursion to abandoned Spreepark, Berlin - Sept 2017

Some 25 members of the attractions industry gathered to explore an abandoned amusement park in East Berlin on Sept 25, 2017.

This guided tour was organized by the European & Middle East Division (EME) of the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) as one of the slate of TEA activities during the 2017 IAAPA Euro Attractions Show.

The former Kulturpark Planterwald Berlin (1969-1989) was constructed on 73 acres next to the river Spree, and took the name Spreepark Berlin in 1989. It was a popular entertainment destination during its time, reaching a reported 1.5 million in annual attendance.

Patronage began to decline after the fall of the Berlin wall (1989) and people began to have more options available to them. Despite some improvements and additions to the park, by 2001 annual attendance had diminished to a reported 400,000 for the year and Spreepark was declared insolvent. A music video and a movie have been filmed in the park. Currently, Spreepark is owned by the City of Berlin.

Many thanks to TEA member Alex Korting for sponsoring this unique outing.
