TEA goes behind the scenes at Poverty Encounter

The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) Western North America Division organized a behind-the-scenes event at Poverty Encounter on 16 May 2019.

Poverty Encounter is a 16,000 sq ft immersive and educational exhibit in Sylmar, CA (greater Los Angeles) that takes visitors on a journey into the lives of children living in extreme poverty around the globe. The total participation was about 80 people, including more than 40 TEA registrants plus a sizable contingent from Storyland Studios, the event sponsor.

The 60-90 minute guest experience begins with a simulated air journey. A converted airplane cabin is the vehicle, with visuals outside the windows depicting the third-world countries guests will visit. Narrated by children from each region, the visitor then walks through four separate themed environments. They portray contemporary scenes and situations of squalor, poverty, exploitation and devastation in Guatemala, Romania, Nepal and Haiti. Video presentations, multisensory effects and human guides help to tell the story of hunger, disaster, injustice, and hope. Next, visitors are allowed to decompress and participate in a volunteer service event by assembling food care packages that will be sent to the same countries just experienced. The Poverty Encounter is a division of Children’s Hunger Fund.

The TEA behind-the-scenes event included a special presentation by the program facilitators. Our group heard from Dave Phillips, President of Children’s Hunger Fund; Alissa Whitely, Director of Poverty Encounter; Peter McGowan, Chief Design Officer of Storyland Studios; Freddy Martin, Host of the Themed Attraction Podcast and initial creative director for the attraction. Our TEA group also enjoyed refreshments.

Many thanks to the event sponsors, Storyland Studios.
