70 attend TEA educational panel on 3D audio - Tracy Balsz reports

Making the most of resources within the TEA creative community, the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) Western North America Division organized an educational panel discussion on 3D Audio, “Ear Splitting:  Technology and Audio in the Immersive Space,” in May 2019.

The session was enthusiastically received by a packed house (70 people), in the Los Angeles Times Theatre at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA (greater Los Angeles). The evening began with a euphony of sound and a demonstration of Universal Studios Hollywood theme park music soundtracks, an effect created with portable surround sound transducers.

The panel discussion was moderated by Stephen Thomas Cavit, Composer and Principal of Iconic Sound and Music, accompanied by representatives of several TEA member companies that have distinguished themselves professionally in the field.

Speakers:

  • Stacy Quinealty, Creative Directtor of AV Design, Universal Studios Hollywood
  • Yiannis Cabolis, Director Technical Innovations, Electrosonic
  • Bob Bonniol, Creative Director, Mode Studios (Bonniol was seen recently at the TEA Summit and TEA Thea Awards Gala in connection with Fantastic Journey by Princess Cruises, recipient of a Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement)
  • Vaughn Hannon, Creative Technologist, The Bezark Company
  • Hector Caiazza, Principal Designer, Hotopp Associates

Two hours of informative questioning and answers provided valuable insight into this specialty craft and the role of audio in immersive experience design.

Many thanks to sponsors Iconic Sound and Music, Mode Studios, The Bezark Company, and Hotopp Associates, and to everyone involved in producing this successful event. Videographers were on hand thanks to Super 78 and Worldbuildr, and we expect to have the panel discussion available in the near future for viewing on TEA TV.
