EPISODE 1 - GUEST EXPECTATIONS DRIVE REINVENTION

Hosted by Lisa Passamonte Green

Thursday, 6 May

Looking Ahead: Making positive change during and after the global pandemic.

Prior to 2020, it would have been hard to imagine a global event that could have had such an impact on our industry – an industry that relies on bringing people together in their leisure time. This keynote sessions brings together industry leaders from around the world to share strategic perspectives on the positive outcomes of the pandemic, the importance of our work as a global industry in what’s next, and to offer advice and encouragement for our global audience.

Speakers include Andreas Anderson (CEO Liseberg), Owen Zhao (President, TEA Asia Pacific Board & President, Max-Matching Entertainment Co., Ltd.) Chad Kunimoto (Manager, Global Business Development, Themed Entertainment, Panasonic), and Chuck Fawcett (TEA International Board President, CEO Animax Designs).

Adjusting to Changing Times

The pandemic certainly is a challenge but also an opportunity. It accelerates new thinking and the implementation of new or already existing technologies. In fact, in the future we may be looking back and say “can you imagine that before 2020 people were still shaking hands, wasted time by daily commuting to work in traffic jams, preferring extensive travel over time and money saving video calls, and people were still putting up with long packed queue lines? Kees Albers (CEO of Unlimited Leisure) explores all of this and more to help us all adjust to the changing times.

Let’s Get Back to Business

As the pandemic and its associated safety measures continue to wreak personal, business, and economic havoc, it seems that whatever “the new normal” is, it is going to be anything but normal. Hear how this group of TEA entrepreneurs tackled these challenges by developing an advisory group to study and assist clients with germicidal lighting, a science-based, cost-effective solution that inactivates pathogens. Learn how their collaboration can help venue owners provide a safer guest experience and manage new guest expectations and regulatory obligations.

This panel includes Steve Birket (Vice President, Birket Engineering), Brian Buholtz (President, Buholtz Professional Engineering), Christine Marez (Vice President, Sustainability, Cumming), Mark D. Fergus (Regional Vice President for Southwest, Cumming) and Lisa Passamonte Green (CEO and Principal-in-Charge, Visual Terrain, Inc.), and is moderated by David Green (COO and President, Visual Terrain, Inc.)

A Castle Reimagined

Inspired by dreamers and believers, the re-imagined Castle of Magical Dreams stands proudly as the centerpiece of Hong Kong Disneyland as a symbol of hopes, dreams and possibilities. This presentation explores the design, fabrication and construction processes used to reimagine an iconic structure.  Using the 13 stories of Disney Princesses and Queens as inspiration, the architectural design of the castle embraces their unique characteristics, through the subtle interpretation of colors, icons, symbols, patterns and cultural features. The design takes cues from many different architectural styles and references from different parts of the world, based on our Princesses and Queens’ origins, in turn celebrating a sense of diversity and inclusion. As the new castle was expanded upon an existing castle and the whole transformation happened in an operating park, an innovative construction strategy was devised and used to reduce the construction time onsite. It is the first time ever for a castle to undergo such a grand transformation in Disney history.

Featuring the Walt Disney Imagineering Asia team of Kelly Willis (Executive Creative Director), Amanda Chiu (Producer) and Louise Pang (Director of Environmental Design & Engineering), and moderated by Mark Schirmer (Creative Executive).

Thursday, 27 May

Part 1: Reinventing the Process

In Part 1 of this two-part series on game engine technology, a group of industry experts will demonstrate how real-time engines are inadvertently reinventing the process of design, development, and fabrication for our entire industry.  They will explore the new real-time tools and technologies that are enabling project teams to collaborate remotely, simulate uncertainty, ask smarter questions, and mitigate risk.  Ultimately, they will discuss the emergence of these new tools, and how they have re-written pipelines and redefined the entire creative development process.

In conversation with moderator Michael Libby (Founder & CEO, Worldbuildr), panelists include Don Carson (Senior Art Director, The Hettema Group), Lara Cawsey (Line Producer, THE THIRD FLOOR), Ron Martin (Creative & Technical Director, Unity Technologies), and Lauren Etta Riley (Experience Development Manager, Oceaneering Entertainment Systems).

Part 2: Reinventing the Product

The Real-Time Magic Conversation continues as a second panel of industry leaders will converge to talk about their experience using real-time media in guest-facing attractions. They will explore how producing real-time media is different from producing traditional attraction content, the current state of real-time hardware and whether an attraction can ever be truly future-proofed. The group will also explore inclusivity and how to sure that a real-time attraction is fun for everyone. This candid conversation will include lessons learned firsthand during the design and development of recent Thea Award-winning attractions.

Moderated by Michael Libby (Founder & CEO, Worldbuildr), this panel will include Louis Alfieri (Principal & Chief Creative Officer, Raven Sun Creative), Laurence Beckers (Executive Creative Director, Alterface), Robert Huebner (Engineer, Bonfire Studios), and Asa Kalama (Executive Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering).

EPISODE 3 - REINVENTING IMMERSIVE STORYTELLING

Hosted by Evi Sari

Thursday, 17 June

Future Told: Writing and Living New Myths

Creative leaders from Meow Wolf will explore the fundamental connections of storytelling to what makes us human, the importance of chaos in the creative process and the idea of centralizing the guest as storyteller.  This is sure to be surprising and potentially an unpredictable journey will open our minds to the idea that working in non-standard ways helps the greatest diversity of ideas to emerge. And that ultimately, we can all live the myth we create when we blur the lines of fantasy and reality.

Join Matt King, (Co-Founder & Senior Creative Director, Meow Wolf), Laika Young (Lead Experience Designer, Meow Wolf), Genell Hoechstetter (Senior Creative Director, Meow Wolf) and Jerome Morrison (Design Technologist, Meow Wolf) as they explore this fascinating topic.

EPISODE 4 SHARED CONNECTIONS

Hosted by Adam Bezark

Pandemic Lemonade

What can we squeeze from this lemon of a year to refresh and reinvent our industry moving forward? In the face of dramatic upheaval, today's creators are finding new ways to connect with audiences and deliver compelling places and experiences in quarantine-friendly formats. Some of these techniques have the potential to shift aspects of the industry in exciting ways, even after the necessity for social distancing. This will be a panel discussion featuring creators from The Bezark Company, Netflix, Mister & Mischief, and artist April Soetarman, who will explore unique storytelling techniques that they’ve developed and utilized in the past few months. These creative approaches have the potential to make our industry more accessible and more engaging, even for those who cannot attend traditional, in-person experience in the future.

Featuring Adam Bezark, (President / Creative Director, The Bezark Company), Jeff Crocker, (Co-founder / Creative Producer, Mister & Mischief), Andy Crocker, (Co-founder / Creative Consultant & Live Experience Director, Mister & Mischief), April Soetarman, (Experience Designer)  Greg Lombardo, (Head of Experiences, Netflix).

Asking the Right Questions

What makes an attraction inclusive? What perspectives should you include, and how can you engage more diverse voices throughout your project strategy and execution?  “Asking the Right Questions” offers an informal, practical rubric for creating themed experiences that are all the more meaningful, fun, and memorable.  With backgrounds in museums, attractions, interactive tech, and people management, the three panelists approach these practices from a range of viewpoints. Learn how your approach to recruitment, design, and production can go a long way to making every guest feel truly welcome.

This panel includes Trent Oliver (Principal and Managing Director, Blue Telescope), Monica O. Montgomery, (Curator of Special Projects + Programs with Smithsonian Institution Arts + Industries Building, CoFounder and Strategic Director of Museum Hue), and Leah Jaikaran, (Director of People, Forrec).

Shared Connections Through Five Universal Languages

Is it possible to develop universal content that works across cultures and demographics?  From a melodical reading of the Quran in Dubai to the tick-tock of the Astronomical Clock in Prague. Whether it’s Spaceship Earth at EPCOT, the lighting of the last Olympic Opening Ceremony in Rio de Janeiro or even the math of Buzz Price; we’ll discover that it is possible to develop stories that transcend cultures and demographics using the universal languages of music, geography, light, time and math. This conversation brings together creators with expertise in each of these disciplines to share their experiences in developing universal content that works across cultures and demographics to bridge cultures through storytelling and create shared connections around the world.

Speakers include Eric Hoff (Creative Director, Thinkwell) Ignacio “Iggy” Rosenberg, (Senior Director, Lightswitch), Yael Coifman (Senior Partner, Leisure Development Partners (LDP), and Geoff Thatcher (Founder & Chief Creative Officer, Creative Principals).
