Garner Holt and the ATC Kick off Summit Week for Western Division

A busy week for themed entertainment it was, when Attractions Technology Collaborative (ATC) hosted their West Coast two-day workshop of the Attractions Technology Lab: Dark Ride Experience at Garner Holt Productions, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 19-22, 2022.  Preceding the later festivities in Anaheim at the TEA Summit and Thea’s Thursday – Saturday that same week, the Collaborative invited members of the Themed Entertainment Association to a mixer and tour event in Redlands, CA, Tuesday evening, April 19th.

Garner Holt Productions animatronics shop was the host of the mixer. Shuttle busses arrived from Burbank and Orange County bringing 150 guests to the event. Guests were greeted with hors’ deuvres and spirits from a local brewery and had a chance to catch up and celebrate seeing one another IRL. The Attractions Technology Collaborative, a melding of talents from Alcorn McBride for AV Technology, Christie Digital for Media Technology, Oceaneering for Ride Vehicle Technology, Weigl Controls for animatronic, lighting and media control technology, and Garner Holt for animatronic technology all combined efforts to create a dark ride experience that could be displayed publicly with the technologies exposed for close inspection. The Attractions Technology Lab is designed to showcase technical solutions in real-world applications. The companies involved created a full mock-up of a dark ride leaving all the technologies exposed.  Guests listened to a brief panel discussion on how the system was designed, then got to ride the dark ride and see the technology operating in real-time.

After the guests had the opportunity to look under the skirt of the ride vehicle, they were escorted for an in-depth tour (no pictures allowed) of Garner Holt Productions factory and the creation of animatronic characters for theme parks and experiences. Garner Holt, who is passionate about education of young folks, and has created a STEM workshop in-house for school children who visit his facility on a weekly basis, was a recipient of a Thea Award on Saturday, April 23, for the work he has done in rolling out Animakerspace STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) workshops in school settings across America.

Thanks to ATC and Garner Holt for a fun kick-off to an amazing week of Themed Entertainment celebration.
