Walt Discovers Tiki An Enchanted Tiki TEA Party

By: Cindy Dice

The main attraction took place on August 10th… it was the Tiki TEA Party and Tiki Talk event which was held at Kahuna Tiki Tu. This in-person mixer hosted by the TEA Western North America Division and sponsored by Live Action Attractions saw over 200 TEA members enjoying a night of networking, drinks, food, and friendship. The highly anticipated event turned out to be a huge hit as tickets were sold out, and it showed as the restaurant reached capacity within an hour of the event’s start time. The venue was filled with an assortment of tiki memorabilia, from masks to statues, with other, more tropical and nautical themes featuring colorful birds, seashells, and a life-size deep sea diver complete with a suit and dive helmet.

The highlight of the evening was an informative and humorous Tiki Talk presented by David Marley, a.k.a. Dr. Skipper, and due to his extensive research was able to share with guests the historical background and inspiration of what ultimately led to the creation of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room. A former Jungle Boat Cruise “Skipper,” Marley also shared some great behind the scenes stories from his time working for Disney. TEA members were given the inside scoop on the resources used by Imagineers to give the Enchanted Tiki Room’s authentic Polynesian-inspired layout and charm. The evening continued after the presentation, as guests networked, imbibed and enjoyed dishes from the menu.  All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening that went on much longer than most had planned.
