Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement - Airport Destination Experience

Jewel Changi Airport, Singapore

Singapore Changi Airport has been named the world's best airport every year since 2013. With that reputation in mind, it created the Jewel, aimed at bringing a new travel and leisure experience to the airport passengers and to local Singaporeans. The Jewel officially opened on October 18th, 2019, receiving about 300,000 visitors per day.

The Jewel features a Southeast Asian themed forest world with tropical foliage and a jungle-like area, called the Shiseido Forest Valley. More than 900 trees, 220 species of plants, and 60,000 shrubs and orchids surround the world’s tallest indoor waterfall: the Rain Vortex. It also features a hotel, more than 280 retail and dining options, leisure themed attractions including a family recreation and leisure area (Canopy Park) and interactive games and immersive attractions illuminating the history of the airport (Changi Experience Studio) under a 10 story high glass dome architectural marvel. Other family based entertainment activities include two different mazes, suspended nets for bouncing and walking, four ‘discovery’ slides and giant concave bowls where guests can jump into mist clouds. The Canopy Park, described as a “14,000 square meter recreational wonderland” offers visitors some entertaining family oriented physical activities.

The Jewel demonstrates excellence, creativity and innovation in the application of a themed, natural environment as part of an airport experience. The entire themed experience actively engages the visitor to become a participant who interacts with the environment and other
visitors; all elements within Jewel are beautifully designed to seamlessly fit within the immersive world. "The component of the traditional mall is combined with the experience of nature, culture, education and recreation, aiming to provide an uplifting experience, drawing both visitors and local residents alike to a place where the people of Singapore interact with the people of the world.

Since its opening, The Jewel has been described as a wondrous world where nature meets retail. This wondrous world activates all of the visitor’s senses with an immediate experience of awe upon entering the glass dome biosphere gardens and seeing for the first time the Rain Vortex waterfall and its surrounding gardens. It is truly an unbelievable spectacle of beauty and perfection. Guests are also entertained by an impressive nightly show of video projections, sound and lighting effects. The second layer of immersion happens when exploring the different floors of The Jewel. The Shiseido Forest Valley offers guests a sense of physically ‘hiking’ through the forest with 30 minute walking trails, illuminated at night with interactive lighting and immersive so und effects.

In conclusion, it is the multi sensory experiential arrival, the quality of the integration of the natural and nature themed environments and the family entertainment aspect of the Canopy park and the Experience Studio, that makes The Jewel unique and worthy of a Thea Award honor. The Jewel has been able to create an environment that goes far beyond just creating a layer on top of their 280 retail and dining options. It created a new destination where you actually feel good, where you want to stay to explore, relax and connect with the environment and most importantly with the people around you.
