Business Description for Membership Directory: A graduate of the USC Cinema School, Van Ling managed to take an “Aliens” Halloween costume he built on a dare in 1986 and parlay it into a 35-year career in filmmaking and visual effects. After gaining the attention of producer Gale Anne Hurd and director James Cameron, he spent eight years getting his “graduate education” at Cameron’s side on the ground floor of the digital filmmaking and VFX revolution, on the sets and behind the scenes of such films as “The Abyss” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”.
As Creative Director/VFX Supervisor for Banned from the Ranch Entertainment and later as a freelance visual effects supervisor, graphic designer, editor and digital artist, Ling’s diverse credits range from feature films (“Twister”, “Men in Black”, “Starship Troopers”, “Doctor Dolittle” and “Titanic”) and theme park attractions (Disney’s “Star Tours”) to designing and creating several of the THX trailers seen in theatres around the world. With a keen interest in film education for both students and fans, Ling also became a pioneering creator/producer of in-depth special features and innovative menus that helped define the possibilities of the laserdisc/DVD/Blu-ray formats, garnering multiple awards for such titles as the Special Editions of “The Abyss”, “T2”, “Independence Day” and the first six “Star Wars” films on DVD.
A longtime member of the Visual Effects Society, Ling was honored in 2022 as a VES Fellow for a decade of service on the VES Board and its many committees and events, and is also an active member of the Academy's Visual Effects Branch and has produced presentations and inspiring editorial montages for both organizations for many years. Also a longtime member of the PGA and the Screen Actors Guild, Ling joined the DGA in 2016 when making his feature film writing and directorial debut on “Cliffs of Freedom”.
